Tampa Bay High School Football Combine Spotlight: Will Gunther

This year marks the 10th Annual Tampa Bay High School Football Combine, presented by the Tampa Bay Sports Commission.  With so many exceptional student-athletes in attendance, we'd like to provide the opportunity to get to know the players a little before they hit the field at this year's combine.


Will Gunther, 5'9", 145lbs.

Q: "What do you think distinguishes you from every other player in the nation?"

A: "My drive and work ethic is what I think really separates me from other players.  I just love the game and try my hardest every day."

Q: "What do you hope to gain out of your participation in the Tampa Bay High School Football Combine?"

A: "I hope to get better and meet some coaches along the way."

Q: "What are your strengths?  What do you need to improve on?"

A: "My strengths are my footwork, speed, ability to break tackles, throwing on the run, and juking.  I need to improve on my arm strength and accuracy a bit."

Q: "What extracurricular or community involvement activities do you participate in?  What are your hobbies outside of football?"

A: "I like to train for sports, hang out with friends, go fishing, play video games, go to church, and just have a good time."

Q: "Which player, if any, do you model your game after or often get compared to by your teammates on the field?"

A: "I'd normally compare myself to Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, or Tim Tebow.  I like to model my running game after Newton's, my long passing motion after Newton, my short passes after Russell's, and the intensity Tebow played with."

Q: "How have you evolved over the years as a player?"

A: "I've gotten a lot stronger, better, more focused, and switched from a WR to a QB."

Q: "What is your proudest moment in football?"

A: "My proudest moment in football is every time I wear the black and gold to represent my school that's done so much for me and my fallen teammate, Nick Azzue #24. RIP."

Q: "What is your proudest moment off the field?"

A: "My proudest moment off the field was when I became a Christian because I realize this was the most important decision in my life."

Q: "What celebrity would play you in the movie version of your life and why?"

A: "Adam Sandler.  We have a similar sense of humor."

Q: "What TV show marathon will keep you on the couch all day?"

A: "None.  Outside is where I live."

Q: "Who/what has been the biggest influence on football in your life?  How so?"

A: "My grandpa, because he's always been there for me and taught me the game originally."

Q: "What honors or awards have you received (both athletic and non-athletic)?"

A: "I play three varsity sports currently, and I used to play JV basketball; football - 1 time offensive player of the game, JV basketball - 14 time game MVP, 1 time team state tournament MVP, 1 time team overall MVP, 2nd in state for MVP voting, varsity basketball - 1 time MVP, varsity soccer - 2 time player of the game, 1 time team state tournament MVP, all-state honorable mention, 4.0 GPA, Presidential Honor Roll."

Q: "What is your favorite movie?"

A: "That's a tough one.  I'd have to say either Forrest Gump or Good Will Hunting."

Q: "Who is your favorite NFL team?"

A: "The Pittsburgh Steelers"

Q: "What is your favorite food?"

A: "Anything and everything"

Q: "What college interest have you received?"

A: "Multiple Ivy League schools, FCS, D2, D3, NAIA, haven't drawn much FBS/D1-A yet."

Q: "What are your statistics from your previous season?"

A: "Freshman varsity stats: 15 tackles, 33 rec yards, 1 rec TD, 25 rushing yards, 4 KR for 65 yards, 1 PD, 1 QB hurry"
